It could be within days or weeks, the newspaper is reporting on its website.
Penn State football coach Joe Paterno's 46-year career atop the Nittany Lion program will end soon, perhaps within days or weeks, the New York Times is reporting on its website, citing two people who have been briefed on conversations involving top university officials in the wake of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky's arrest.Paterno's weekly news conference was canceled this morning by Penn State President Graham Spanier. It was to be Paterno's first public comment since Sandusky was charged with molesting boys over a 15-year period and two university officials were charged with not reporting the alleged abuse and lying to a grand jury.
Paterno is not implicated in the criminal case, but administrators Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, a Nazareth native, were charged with failing to report that a witness -- former player and current offensive coach Mike McQueary -- told them he saw Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in the football showers in 2002. McQueary first reported the incident to Paterno, who alerted Curley.
Paterno is the all-time win leader in Division 1 football.
