The stores have yet to receive reports of illnesses associated with consumption of the gelato.
Salmonella, a bacterial foodborne illness, can be life-threatening, especially for those with weak immune systems such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.
The most common symptoms of the illness are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.
All sell-by dates of the 16-ounce product are included in the recall with UPC number 18685200094.
The company is urging customers who have purchased the product to discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to Giant/Martin's for a full refund.
