Partial service has resumed at Lehigh Valley International Airport today, one day after all flights were cancelled because of Hurricane Sandy.

Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority Executive Director Charles Everett said United and Delta airlines resumed departures and landings at LVIA today, starting about noon. Flights included connections to Atlanta, Detroit and Chicago.

“Given the conditions on the road, I highly recommend people check with their airlines before heading to the airport,” Everett said.

Everett said the terminal is in good shape and can handle all passenger needs once additional airlines authorize flights. The airport, which remained open during the storm, has suffered power disruptions at some of its hangers but otherwise fared well, he said.

Elsewhere, Superstorm Sandy grounded more than 16,000 flights across the Northeast and the globe, and it could be days before some passengers can get where they’re going.

The three big New York airports were closed today by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

New York has the nation's busiest airspace, with about one-quarter of all U.S. flights traveling to or from there each day. So cancelations here can dramatically impact travel in other cities.

Delays rippled across the U.S., affecting travelers in cities from San Francisco to Atlanta. Others attempting to fly out of Europe and Asia also were stuck.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
