Sunday circulation fell 3 percent, according to a new report.

Average daily circulation at the Express-Times fell 2 percent in the latest reporting period, according to a new report.

The Audit Bureau of Circulations said Tuesday The Express-Times daily circulation fell to 39,216 for the six months ended Sept. 30. That’s down from 40,024 one year ago. Sunday circulation fell 3 percent to 49,584 from 51,092 over that time, according to ABC, a media industry group.

The newspaper industry in general is battling declines in print circulation while upgrading digital operations in response to changing habits of readers and advertisers. ABC has adjusted its methodology to include digital products.

Newspapers nationwide reported mixed results in the latest report.

Average daily circulation in the April-September period slid 0.2 percent for the 613 newspapers included in the semiannual study by ABC. Sunday circulation increased 0.6 percent.

The Morning Call of Allentown reported a 10.2 percent drop in average daily circulation to 83,654 in the April-September period, down from 93,175 one year ago. Sunday circulation fell 2.7 percent to 120,127.

The decline coincides with further staff changes at the Allentown newspaper. Morning Call marketing manager Kay McClane emailed colleagues this week that her position was being eliminated as part of a business transition.

Renee Mutchnik, marketing director for the Baltimore Sun Media Group, which is affiliated with the Morning Call, said changes were made to the Call’s marketing department to align business and client needs. She declined to say how many positions were cut.
