Never run a generator indoors or in an enclosed space where fumes can accumulate, a PPL Electric Utilities spokesman says.
With the death of a Lower Macungie Township woman from the impact of running a generator in her garage in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, PPL Electric Utilities spokesman Joe Nixon said this morning he can't emphasize enough that if people are going generate their own electricity that they do so safely.
Never run a generator indoors or in an enclosed space where fumes can accumulate, Nixon said.
The other issue involving generators, Nixon said, is to make sure they are installed correctly if they feed directly into the electrical service. If they are not installed correctly, they can back-feed electricity into surrounding lines. So, when linemen deenergize a line to work on it, the generator's unaccounted for power could potentially harm the workers, he said.
Tammy Kerosetz, 48, of the 3600 block of Schoeneck Road, was
overcome Tuesday morning by exhaust fumes from a portable generator in her garage and died, Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said.
