The Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation is donating $1 million to the American Red Cross to assist with disaster relief in New York, New Jersey and Delaware in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, the foundation announced this afternoon.
Many of the hardest hit areas are home to the magazine, newspaper and digital companies of Advance Publications Inc., and the donation by the foundation will help provide for critical immediate and ongoing recovery needs in those locations, according to a news release.
The Express-Times is an Advance Publications newspaper as are The Star-Ledger of Newark and The Patriot-News of Harrisburg.
"It is with profound respect for the work of the American Red Cross that we send you this gift on behalf of our companies,” S.I. Newhouse Jr. and Donald E. Newhouse said on behalf of the foundation in a joint statement.
Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the Red Cross, said in the news release that the Red Cross is appreciative for the generous gift from the foundation. She noted that millions of people have been affected by Superstorm Sandy.
