Christie said the state's utilities assured him power would be restored to most residents by tonight.
Most utility customers who lost power when Superstorm Sandy socked New Jersey should have their service restored by tonight.
Public Service Electric & Gas, the state's largest utility, says roughly 12,700 customers remain without power from the hurricane, down from an original 1.7 million. And another 8,300 who lost electricity during Wednesday night’s nor’easter were also still awaiting restoration, the company said.
Jersey Central Power & Light had about 84,866 customers without power this morning, mainly in Monmouth and Ocean counties. Orange & Rockland had reduced the number of its customers without power to 100 in Bergen and Passaic counties, while Atlantic City Electric had roughly 2,400 outages.
During a press briefing on Friday, Gov. Chris Christie said the state's utilities assured him power would be restored to most residents by tonight.
The governor also said he would decide early next week whether to rescind the odd-even gas rationing plan he ordered in 12 counties. Since the rationing began, long lines at service stations have largely disappeared.
