He also approved federal waivers that will reimburse 25 percent of monthly food stamps to participants of the state's SNAP.

New Jersey officials announced Friday several extensions and waivers to those affected by Superstorm Sandy.

Gov. Chris Christie approved federal waivers that will reimburse 25 percent of monthly food stamps to participants of the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP, according to a release. Many were forced to trash food supplies during extended power outages, so the waiver will provide a portion of recipients' SNAP allotment for October.

Recipients in 16 counties that lost power for at least 50 percent of their population will automatically receive refunds on their EBT card. The counties include Atlantic, Bergen, Cape May, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren.

SNAP members can also buy hot and cold prepared meals with the waiver from participating stores, for a limited time.

  • State residents will have more time to pay fourth-quarter property taxes, according to another release.

Christie signed an executive order Friday that extends the grace period for property taxes originally due Nov. 1.

"Property owners, many of whom are facing tremendous hardship and loss, should not have the added stress of paying a penalty for late taxes," Christie said in a prepared statement. "This grace period extension helps to ease the strain."

Municipalities that are not holding an accelerated tax sale have until Nov. 16. All municipalities' governments also have the option of extending the grace period to Dec. 31.
  • College students will have an extra month to file state financial aid applications and apply to grant and scholarship programs.

Students looking to apply for NJ STARS/II and the Governor's Urban Scholarship program or state aid applications, have until Dec. 14.

Help for student loan payments is also being offered.
