The detective was acquitted Thursday of aggravated assault, the most serious charge he faced. But a jury was unable to reach a verdict on three lesser counts.

Community activists plan to protest a jury's acquittal of a Newark police detective on charges he used excessive force against a teenager during a scuffle that was caught on video surveillance.

Detective Angel Pared was acquitted Thursday of aggravated assault, the most serious charge he faced. But a jury was unable to reach a verdict on three lesser counts.

Prosecutors claimed Pared assaulted the teen in March 2010, then allegedly falsified reports about the matter.

Pared had maintained that the teen threatened him during a legitimate stop. An attorney for the detective claimed at the time his client was being scapegoated the week prior to Newark's mayoral election, to mollify voters angry at the police.

Protesters are planning to rally Tuesday at City Hall.
