He was a veteran of World War II. He was a staff officer in the Merchant Marines. He served on Liberty ships and Victory ships in both the South Pacific and the European theater.

He was the recipient of the Merchant Marine combat bar, along with ribbons for serving in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean theaters of war.
