One driver was killed and two injured this morning when a tractor-trailer traveling north on Route 33 in Hamilton Township, Monroe County, crashed through the guardrail into the southbound lanes, striking a 2012 Kia head-on and leading two other cars to crash, Pennsylvania State Police at Swiftwater report.
The driver of the Kia, who was wearing a seat belt, was killed. Police are withholding identification until the person's family could be notified, according to a news release.
The highway was closed for nine hours in Hamilton Township, the Pocono Record reports.
Freddy Jaramillo, 24, of Elizabeth, N.J., was driving south in the right lane at 6:17 when his 2003 Freightliner truck went through the guardrail, hit the Kia and rolled over on the highway, police report. Jaramillo, who was wearing a seat belt, was hurt, police said.
The Kia hit the guardrail and came to a rest in the southbound right lane. A 2001 Subaru, driven by Laverne S. Moyer, 74, of Pocono Township, Pa., struck the Kia from behind, pushing it back into the guardrail, police said. Moyer, who was wearing a seat belt, was injured, police said.
A 1999 Vokswagen Jetta, driven by Joel Pinkerton, of Oxford Township, hit the undercarriage of the truck. Pinkerton, who was wearing a seat belt, was not hurt, police said.
Police did not say if anyone was hospitalized.
Jaramillo was cited with a travel lane violation, police said. None of the other drivers was charged.
