New Jerseyans could have wine shipped to their homes from small out-of-state wineries and Garden State growers could ship their product directly to customers under legislation that has cleared the state Legislature.

The Assembly and state Senate both voted late Monday night to advance a bill that revises the law governing direct wine sales.

Proponents say the bill is good for customers and New Jersey-based wineries. But opponents claim direct shipping will hurt retail liquor stores and distributors.

The Assembly passed the bill by a 51-18-4 vote, while the Senate approved it 24-9.

It now heads to Gov. Chris Christie for his consideration.
