At least one person died Wednesday as snow and ice made area roads hazardous and led to numerous accidents, police report this morning.
A Cincinnati, Ohio, man checking out crash damage to a car about 9:44 p.m. on Interstate 78 West in South Whitehall Township was struck by an SUV as it spun on the highway, Pennsylvania State Police at Fogelsville report.
The rear driver's side of a 2003 GMC Yukon driven by Valerie L. Cavagnaro, 41, of Newington, Conn., hit Richard Helms, 60, who had pulled onto the right shoulder and then walked into the left lane to check on the disabled vehicle, police and the Lehigh County Coroner's Office said.
Helms was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township where he was pronounced dead at 10:31 p.m.. He died from multiple blunt force trauma injuries and his death was ruled an accident, the coroner's office said this morning in a news release.
Police say the investigation continues and ask anyone who witnessed the crash to call 610-395-1438.
Also this morning, police detailed a crash that left a truck hanging off an I-78 bridge near Hellertown.
Vincent Wilder, 30, of Philadelphia, suffered minor to moderate injuries after the 2007 Freightliner tractor-trailer he was driving in the right lane tried to avoid a car that was likely struck by another tractor-trailer which jackknifed in the left lane, police said.
The blue Nissan went from the left lane into the right in front of Wilder's truck, police said. The truck swerved to the right to miss the car and Wilder lost control on the snow-covered road, jackknifing and hitting the concrete barrier on the overpass about 2:30 p.m. The front of the truck went up and over the barrier and was suspended over Saucon Park in Bethlehem, police said.
Other I-78 travelers freed Wilder from the truck and he was taken to St. Luke's University Hospital in Fountain Hill for treatment. State police at Belfast ask anyone who saw the crash to call 610-759-6106.
An Allentown man was driving too fast for snowy conditions when he lost control of a 1996 Toyota Camry about 2:13 p.m. on Route 33 South in Bushkill Township, state police at Belfast report.
The car, driven by Dionsio Avila-Ramirez, 45, traveled across the center grass median into the north lanes, spinning 180 degrees before striking a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado driven by William H. Reuter, 75, of Ross Township, Monroe County, police said. Neither Reuter nor his passenger, William A. Jones, 59, of Pen Argyl, was injured.
Avila-Ramirez was taken to Easton Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said. He was no longer in the hospital this morning, according to a records check. Avila-Ramirez faces a traffic citation, police said.
