One person was killed and 86 others were injured in the 377 crashes investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police during the New Year’s holiday driving period, authorities said.

From Dec. 31, 2012, through Jan. 1, state police investigated 377 crashes. Of those, 55 were alcohol-related crashes, police said.

Troopers said they made 184 arrests for driving under the influence and issued 1,884 speeding citations during the holiday period. State police also cited 233 individuals for failure to wear seatbelts and cited an additional 32 for failure to properly restrain children in child safety seats.

During last year’s four-day New Year’s driving period, police reported 10 people were killed and 172 were injured in 552 crashes investigated by the state police. The previous holiday period began Dec. 30, 2011, and ended Jan. 2, 2012.

The crash figures, police say, cover solely the incidents investigated by state police and do not include statistics on crashes that were investigated by other law enforcement agencies.
