McGaheran's commitment to service in Clinton continued after her retirement from teaching when she was elected to Clinton Town Council in 1988 and then, in 1993, became Clinton's first female mayor.
During this time she also worked tirelessly to establish the North Branch of the Hunterdon County Library, which opened in 1999.
