This winter’s high number of flu cases is now affecting Catholic churches in the Lehigh Valley.
The Diocese of Allentown starting Jan. 19 is making two changes at local Masses for health reasons because of the significant number of flu cases. The practices of drinking consecrated wine and physical contact during the exchange of the sign of peace are both being temporarily suspended, the diocese announced today.
Consecrated hosts will still be offered and because Catholics believe that in the sacred host is contained the entire body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ, receiving from the chalice is always optional, the diocese said.
Parishioners are encouraged to bow or nod to persons nearby during the exchange of the sign of peace instead of the traditional shaking of hands, the diocese said.
The flu-related changes will be announced in all parishes in the diocese this weekend.
