There is concern but no immediate safety threat after recent unexpected shutdowns, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission reports.
Federal officials are examining a PPL Corp. nuclear plant near Berwick, Pa., following three unexpected shutdowns. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission sent an inspection team today to the Susquehanna power facility.
The most recent shutdown occurred Dec. 19 after a valve failed to open during plant startup. Officials say that temporarily interrupted the water supply to the Unit 2 reactor.
A commission statement says while the incident posed no immediate safety threat, it raises questions in the wake of two other unplanned shutdowns on Nov. 9 and Dec. 16.
A spokesman for Allentown-based PPL says the plant was always in a stable and safe condition.
The nuclear agency says its inspection will focus on operator performance, equipment reliability and decision-making.
