Gold Coast Fresh Crab Spread is being pulled from Giant Food Store shelves because it may contain listeria monocytogenes.

A crab meat spread is being recalled due to possible bacterium contamination, according to a news release.

Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets pulled Gold Coast Fresh Crab Spread from shelves because the spread may contain listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that causes a rare, but sometimes fatally invasive infection called listeriosis, according to the release.

Symptoms include fever and muscle aches, sometimes accompanied by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Those most vulnerable to the infection include older adults, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems, such as persons with HIV infection or those undergoing chemotherapy.

The infection for pregnant women can be especially dangerous, sometimes leading to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn, according to the release.

Anyone who purchased the 8-ounce spread with an expiration date of Jan. 31 should throw out the spread and bring their receipt to the stores for a full refund.
