If at all possible, commuters should hit the road early.

While most of the snow from the first round of precipitation didn't stick here this morning, the Lehigh Valley and northwest New Jersey are not in the clear.

In the last hour, northern New Jersey has seen two or three inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service's latest winter storm warning.

"Treacherous travel conditions" are expected to start in northeast New Jersey and move toward the Lehigh Valley later tonight, the warning said. Blowing and drifting snow may cause trouble in northwest New Jersey, it said.

Representatives from Hunterdon and Warren counties both advise workers to head home as soon as possible.

“It definitely seems like the storm’s going to intensify around the rush hour,” said Hunterdon Office of Emergency Management Director Brayden Fahey. “If it does put down one to two inches an hour, the conditions just aren’t going to be suitable for traveling.”

Warren County Public Safety Director Frank Wheatley agreed, saying he understands the heaviest snow will happen between 4 and 9 p.m. tonight.

“If at all possible, they need to leave early,” Wheatley said of commuters.

Heavy snow accumulation of between six and 10 inches is expected for the Lehigh Valley and northwest New Jersey, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures should fall through the 20s and gusty winds up to 30 mph are expected into the night. Snow should taper off before sunrise Saturday.
