Endangered birds on their way south were blown off course and stranded in the Lehigh Valley, according to local police.

Alburtis police said in an advisory that the arctic loons need medical attention and that anyone who spots one should call the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center at 610-435-4729.

The birds’ legs are designed for water only, and they can’t stand or walk on land without getting stuck, according to the advisory. They usually fly at night.

Police believe a flock got off course while migrating to the shore in Virginia and Maryland. They’ve been spotted in Allentown, Lower Macungie Township, Catasauqua and Carbon County, according to police.
