Express-Times journalists won nine awards last week in the 2012 New Jersey Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
Staffers captured one first-place, three second-place and five third-place honors in the statewide journalism contest.
Winners are:
- Reporter Pamela Sroka-Holzmann and Lehigh Valley Editor Rudy Miller, who won second place in the responsible journalism/enterprise category for their work in exploring the incidence of youth cancer in the Nazareth area.
- Assistant News Editor Stephen Novak won second place for best headlines.
- Former business editor, Tom Zanki captured first place in the category of business and financial writing portfolio.
- Reporter Tiffany Bentley won second place in lifestyle and entertainment writing portfolio.
- Features Editor Kelly Huth won third place in lifestyle and entertainment writing portfolio.
- Photographer Matt Smith and Huth won third place in best Web project for Smith’s seasonlong photo essay of what goes on behind the scenes at Lehigh Valley Ironpigs games.
- Features page designer Melanie Henry won third place in the feature section page design portfolio category.
- Reporter Andrew George won third place for environmental writing portfolio for his Slate Belt coverage of plans to spread sludge on farm fields and GenOn’s plans to shutter its Portland Generating Station in 2015.
- Managing Editor Nick Falsone won third place in the feature/entertainment column category for his Three-minute Meals contributions.
Winners will be recognized April 25 at the NJPA’s annual dinner in Hamilton, N.J.
