Lehigh Valley auto dealers sponsor vo-tech competition, Bethlehem merchant participates in clothes drive - business briefs

Also, Lehigh Carbon Community College is hosting a class those interested in health care jobs.

The Greater Lehigh Valley Auto Dealers Association is sponsoring its annual auto-tech competition Saturday at Northampton Community College.

The competition begins at 8 a.m. and concludes with a 12:30 p.m. award ceremony at NCC’s campus in Bethlehem Township, Pa.

Eight teams from vo-tech schools compete against one another in a series of technical challenges in areas such as engine measurement, electrical wiring repair and information retrieval.

The teams will each work on a Dodge Dart. The vehicles were provided by several Dodge dealers in the Lehigh Valley. The winning team will go on to a national competition in April in New York.

The GLVADA, a nonprofit association of more than 40 local dealerships, has been sponsoring the competition for more than a decade.

A Bethlehem business is partnering with a nonprofit group to help provide clothes appropriate for job interviews to needy woman in the region.

Dressbarn, which has a store in the Shoppes at Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, is helping gather 60,000 articles of clothing for Dress for Success, the nonprofit that collects and distributes the attire, according to a news release.

The drive, which is called S.O.S -- Send One Suit -- Weekend, runs from March 7-10. It’s the 11th consecutive year Dressbarn has participated in the program.

Customers who donate to the store during the four-day drive will receive a 15 percent discount on their purchases.

Lehigh Carbon Community College is offering a healthcare technology specialist class for students Feb. 18 at its campus in North Whitehall Township.

The introductory, non-credit course aims to prepare students to transition to high-demand, healthcare-related careers, according to a news release from the college.

Aside from a charge for the required text, there is no other fee to LCCC students.

The class is being offered through JobTrakPA, a program coordinated through the Pennsylvania Commission of Community Colleges that provides training for high-demand jobs.
