Mission Control finally got through via ground stations in Russia after the station lost the ability to talk via satellites.

Ever have a software upgrade not go exactly as planned?

Imagine the reaction on the International Space Station about 9:45 this morning when a NASA upgrade to flight computer software left the station unable to communicate with Mission Control.

When a data relay system went bad and the primary computer that handles critical functions failed over to a backup, the station wasn't able to talk to or hear from the ground via data and tracking satellites, NASA said on its website.

When the space station about 11 o'clock passed over Russian ground stations, Mission Control was able to get through and tell the six people on the station to connect a backup computer and begin the process of restoring communication, NASA said.

Expedition 34 Commander Kevin Ford said the crew was fine and the station's status was fine, NASA said. Listen to Ford talk to Mission Control explaining the situation.
