Details of the bill will be released in a few days.
Republican Congressman Leonard Lance is working with the House and Energy Commerce Committee to draft gun control legislation in connection with mental health issues. The details of that bill will be released in the next few days, according to Lance's chief of staff, Todd Mitchell.
The congressman and the committee will meet with mental health professionals through next week for the legislation.
Lance advised constituents who attended a town hall meeting Feb. 19 in Lopatcong Township that the bill was still in progress and there were many layers to the issues surrounding the legislation.
“Obviously our goal together is to make sure guns are not in the hands of criminals or the mentally ill,” Lance said, a theme he repeated throughout the evening.
A group of gun control advocates demonstrated outside Lance's office the following day in Westfield, N.J., demanding stricter gun control laws. A smaller group of gun-rights advocates also gathered nearby.
Lance projected during the town hall meeting that he did not see a ban on semi-automatic weapons being passed in the Senate.
