What do you think? Do you think the protests will work? Are they affecting you?
In protests of varying forms, some of the top websites such as Google, Wikipedia, reddit, and other influential tech firms are demonstrating their stances against the Stop Online Piracy Act and ProtectIP Act, which are backed by big entertainment and media interests. This legislation could dramatically change your Internet experience, so many sites are letting users know what life would be like without them.
While Google is still functional, they have used a censor bar over the well-known logo to grab the attention of users and are providing information about the legislation. Wikipedia's English-language site shut down at midnight Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday and the organization said it would stay down for 24 hours.
Reddit says the site will go dark for 12 hours to raise awareness of the legislation. Reddit's site provides a statement saying, "These bills provide overly broad mechanisms for enforcement of copyright which would restrict innovation and threaten the existence of websites with user-submitted content, such as reddit."
