Snow expected to begin this afternoon before turning to ice then rain, forecaster says; some schools closing early

WeatherWorks, based in Hackettstown, expects the rest of the month to be colder than normal.

It's still winter until 7:04 a.m. Wednesday, so why wouldn't it act like winter?

There could be 1 to 3 inches of snow, starting between 1 and 3 this afternoon, and possibly some ice between 8 and 10 tonight, before rain takes over, Frank Lombardo, president of WeatherWorks in Hackettstown, said early this morning. Accumulations could be higher in northern Northampton County and in Monroe and Sussex counties, he said.

Some schools have announced early dismissals. Keep up with the changes on the list we share we share with WFMZ. Among districts making no change for today is Bethlehem Area, where Superintendent Joseph Roy tweeted this morning, "BASD schools will have a regular school day." The Easton Lions Wrestling Classic is postponed.

"Unfortunately, spring's arrival will be delayed," Lombardo said with a laugh. "We're in a very cold weather pattern more typical of February. ... March is traditionally a transition month. It's not bitter cold; it's just not warm. Last year was the warmest March ever. This year it's a little bit colder than normal."

And it's likely to stay that way for the rest of the month, he said, and it could continue into April.

Today is another of what seem like endless nuisance storms since January. The latest was Saturday, but that snow stuck only to lawns and leaves. In northern exposures or roads not hit by much sun, there could be a buildup of slush today, Lombardo said.

Saturday, he said, was preceded by a couple of days of seasonal sunshine. But the last couple of days have been colder and the surface temperatures are chillier today.

Just before 7:45 it was 26 degrees, according to AccuWeather, and Lombardo figures it will be somewhere around freezing when the snow arrives.

As for the ice, he said, "it's hard to get an ice storm in March," but there could be some buildup tonight on tree limbs.

After warming some on Tuesday and likely melting much of what falls today, it cools down again midweek and there could be snow showers on Thursday, he said.

"There could be some semblance of winter at least through the end of the month," he said, "with perhaps the possibility of accumulating snow."

Now, April snow is rarer -- usually there is only a half in to an inch, as compared to 7 to 9 inches in March, he said.

The normal high today, in case you've forgotten what it feels like, is 50. We likely won't see it this week, forecasters say.

The National Weather Service posted a winter weather advisory and a hazardous weather outlook for later today.
