Two people are still being sought in the attempted robbery, a campus spokesman says.
A Kutztown University student was charged today in an armed dorm room break-in earlier this month at the Maxatawny Township, Pa., school, a university spokesman said.Shahaid Smith, 19, a sophomore from Crum Lynne, Pa., was one of three men who on March 8 allegedly stormed into the room in Deatrick Hall, threatened the residents and struck one student, who was not injured, spokesman Matt Santos said. Two of the alleged assailants carried black handguns but no shots were fired, police said. Nothing was taken in the attempted robbery, police said at the time.
It was the first of three assaults in a few days on the campus, crimes which Santos said are still believed to be unrelated.
Smith was arrested this morning by campus police and arraigned in front of District Judge Gail Greth on 12 charges, including robbery, burglary, conspiracy and simple assault, according to court records. Nine of the charges are felonies, court records say. He was sent to Berks County Prison in Leesport, Pa., in lieu of $200,000 bail, court records say.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled 9 a.m. April 5 in front of Greth.
The investigation is continuing and two others are still being sought, Santos said.
The campus, which got a breather with spring break, returned to class Monday and there haven't been any major crimes reported in recent days, Santos said.
The news of the arrest may "calm some nerves a little bit" on campus, Santos said, adding that security efforts were increased after the crimes and students have been encouraged to be "more vigilant about their safety."
