No other company with significant Lehigh Valley operations made the list.
Wegmans Food Markets Inc. ranked No. 4 among Fortune magazine’s annual list of the top 100 companies to work for, marking the only company with significant Lehigh Valley operations to make the grade.Online search giant Google Inc. was No. 1. The issue hits stands Monday.
Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans employs about 1,800 mostly part-time workers in the area. It employs 42,000 in six states companywide.
The supermarket chain ranks among the region’s top 20 employers, with stores in Allentown in Lehigh County, and in Hanover and Lower Nazareth townships in Northampton County.
“The only way to be a great place to shop is to first be a great place to work,” CEO Danny Wegman said in a prepared statement. “When I visit our stores I see how our employees care about each other and care about our customers.”Fortune compiles its annual list by surveying employees — asking them about management's credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie — for two thirds of its score. The other third comes from evaluating a company's pay, benefits, hiring practices and other programs.
Wegmans has consistently scored in the Fortune top 10 and ranked third last year.
Fortune said reasons Wegmans made the list involve its promotion of employee health, including offering a free smoking-cessation program and providing a 24/7 health hotline.
Lehigh Valley Health Network ranked No. 76 in 2009 but has not made the list the last three years.
