PPL opens new fishing pier, Phillipsburg chamber hosting annual dinner - business briefs

Allentown-based PPL Corp. has opened a new fishing pier designed to help people with disabilities fish Lake Wallenpaupack near Hawley, Pa., the company announced this morning.

The pier is in the 5,700-acre lake’s Ironwood Point Recreation Area. PPL operates a 44-megawatt hydroelectric power plant on the lake. The plant has been generating energy since 1926.

The new pier includes handicapped-accessible parking spaces and is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to a news release.

The Phillipsburg Area Chamber of Commerce has scheduled its annual dinner and community awards program for later this month, according to a news release.

The program will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 25 at Marianna’s Banquet Center, 224 Stockton St., Phillipsburg. Chamber members can register to participate for $50; the cost for non-members is $75. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

A Lehigh Valley architect has been selected to speak about urban revitalization Wednesday night at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., a news release says.

Spillman Farmer Architects Principal Joseph N. Biondo was picked to participate in the panel discussion because of his work on the ArtQuest Center on former Bethlehem Steel Corp., property. The center opened at SteelStacks in 2011.

Biondo’s firm is based in Bethlehem.

The panel discussion, scheduled for 6:30 p.m., is part of the museum’s ongoing “Culture as Catalyst: Past, Present, Future” series.
