Compared to the same time last year, the Delaware River Toll Bridge Commission saw decreases in overall toll revenue and traffic last month. The commission's monthly report, which compared March 2012 with March 2013, was released Monday morning during the commission's monthly meeting in Solebury Township, Pa.
According to the report, total toll traffic fell last month by more than 21,000 commercial and passenger vehicles and reflected a 1.1 percent revenue decrease across the commission's seven toll bridges.
Traffic was also down by 3.15 percent along the commission's 11 toll-supported bridges as 84,429 fewer vehicles were recorded in their westbound lanes.
Among the toll bridges connecting Warren and Northampton counties, the Portland-Columbia Toll Bridge saw the greatest decline with a 12.5 percent decrease in total toll traffic as it saw more than 13,000 fewer trucks and vehicles.
The Easton-Phillipsburg Toll Bridge saw a 1.27 percent total traffic decrease with more than 9,000 fewer trucks and vehicles, and the Interstate 78 Toll Bridge saw a decrease of less than 1 percent with more than 8,000 fewer trucks and vehicles.
Bucking the trend, the Delaware Water Gap Toll Bridge saw an increase of more 20,000 trucks and vehicles in March lending itself to a 2.8 percent overall increase.
Commissioner Ed Smith, who also serves as a Warren County freeholder, said that the monthly numbers are not anything to be alarmed about.
Smith said a number of external factors, citing the weather as an example, could be behind the difference between traffic numbers during March 2012 and March 2013.
"You can't really just go by a month," Smith said.
The commission will next meet 10:30 a.m. May 20.
