The Assembly previously passed a package of gun-control bills, some of which are different than the Senate. The Assembly's gun bills include a provision to limit ammunition to 10 bullets per magazine.
The maximum is now 15 bullets.
Senate President Steve Sweeney says he doesn't support the lower limit.
Earlier Monday, Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono held a news conference in Newark urging state lawmakers to pass legislation limiting access to illegal guns and high-capacity magazines.
Booker says leadership has been lacking on the issue of gun violence.
