Authorities allege Kai beat 73-year-old Joseph Galfy Jr. to death in his Clark, N.J. home after they met in New York City.

A homeless, hatchet-wielding hitchhiker who became an Internet celebrity earlier this year has been arrested in Philadelphia and charged with the murder of a New Jersey lawyer.

Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow says Caleb “Kai” McGillvary was arrested at a bus terminal early this evening.

McGillvary became known as “Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker” after intervening in an attack on a California utility worker in February. A TV news interview with him quickly went viral.

Authorities allege McGillvary beat 73-year-old Joseph Galfy Jr. to death in his Clark, N.J. home after they met in New York City. Galfy was found dead Monday, wearing only underwear and socks.

Authorities say statements posted on McGillvary’s Facebook page indicate the encounter was sexual in nature.

McGillvary is being held on $3 million bail.
