Watch Jay Paterno's interview with Matt Lauer on the 'Today' show.
For all the comments about Joe Paterno from former players, colleagues, and people who never knew him, it was his sons who cleared the air about their father's last moments and defended his legacy.
Scott Paterno told the Patriot-News Monday Joe Paterno "always believed that his father expected him to do tremendous things in his life."
Scott Paterno said his father, who was hospital-ridden after taking a turn for the worse during his treatment for lung cancer, felt at peace that he had lived up to that expectation.
And that included when he passed away, despite recent comments that JoePa died of a broken heart.
"He was completely at peace," Scott Paterno said in the article. "He was caught by something he couldn’t beat."
Jay Paterno visited the "Today" show this morning to defend his father’s legacy in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse allegations.
"Through the last couple months you’ve gotten a chance to see his true character in terms of even with all the things that were happening to him, it was never a situation where he sat around and felt bad for himself," Jay Paterno said. "He was very positive with us about the direction he wanted the rest of his life to go and how he wanted to continue to build Penn State and to make sure justice was done for the victims involved. That really didn’t take that much of a toll on him because he’s just such a strong individual."
