Court filing comes one day before one-year anniversary of Jerry Sandusky report.

Penn State’s former President Graham Spanier is initiating a libel and defamation case against Louis Freeh, who a year ago produced a report critical of Spanier’s role in the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Spanier’s lawyer filed paperwork today in Centre County, where the school is located. It disclosed little about the nature of his claims.

The filing comes one day before the one-year anniversary of Freeh’s report, which concluded that Spanier and other high-ranking Penn State administrators failed to protect children against Sandusky.

Under Pennsylvania law, those who believe they have been libeled or defamed have a year to initiate a civil lawsuit.

Calls seeking comment left for Freeh and for Spanier lawyer Elizabeth Ainslie weren’t returned.

The filing, a “praecipe to issue writ of summons,” describes the case as “slander/libel/defamation.”
