The Nazareth Area High School teacher was last heard from July 16 in Mammoth Lakes, Calif.
There were some developments over the weekend in the case of missing hiker Matthew Greene, 39, a Bethlehem resident who teaches in the Nazareth Area School District, according to a Facebook page dedicated to providing information on the adventurer who was last heard from July 16 in mountainous Mammoth Lakes, Calif.
While there were no permits filed with the wilderness office, pages were torn out of Greene's guide for Mount Ritter, so that's where the search is focused, the Facebook page said. A search and rescue team -- it's not clear if it was the Mono County unit -- was sent Saturday to Mount Ritter, where it focused on the lower areas of the mountain, the Facebook page said.
Mount Ritter rises to 13,000 in the Sierra Nevada in Madera County, California, according to a Wikipedia page. It is the 16th tallest mountain in California, according to the page.
An aerial search was planned for Sunday but it's not immediately clear if it happened due to smoke from forest fires, the Facebook page said. The helicopter would transport a search team to the mountain's snowfield, the Facebook page said.
Mammoth Lakes police on Sunday didn't return a phone message. We'll try again at midday.
Greene, who often goes off on wilderness trips in the summer, arrived in late June in Mammoth Lakes. He had been hiking and climbing with a friend, when his car broke down in early July. The friend moved on to the next scheduled spot on the trip. but Greene stayed at a local campground waiting for his car. His mother, Patricia, last heard from him July 16. His hiking companion's wife called police on July 29 after not being able to reach Greene.
Greene's cellphone is off and not traceable, the Facebook page said, citing police.
