Authorities say 59-year-old Rockne Newell opened fire at a township meeting Monday night and killed three men, including the zoning officer and two residents.

Pete Newell said today that his son told him and others that he planned to kill officials in rural Ross Township.

Authorities say 59-year-old Rockne Newell opened fire at a township meeting Monday night and killed three men, including the zoning officer and two residents.

The suspect had feuded with local officials over his junk-strewn property.

Pete Newell says he tried to tell his son that his fight with the township “wasn’t worth killing someone over.” But he says his son replied, “I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do.”

The alleged gunman faces a preliminary hearing Aug. 19. He has not entered a plea.
