A pair of glasses resembling those owned by missing Nazareth Area High School teacher Matthew Greene has been found.
The black-wire rimmed glasses were found late last week near the area where Greene went missing last month during a backpacking trip in California, his mother, Patricia, said today.
The family won’t know if they’re Greene’s glasses until his prescription is confirmed, but it’s given them some hope after almost six weeks with few answers.
“We’re hoping that they’re his -- that it will at least be a starting point, a point where they can look,” Patricia Greene said.
The glasses were found by one of the many local volunteers who have helped search for Greene following his disappearance from the Mammoth Lakes, Calif., area on July 16, Patricia Greene said. The glasses were found Mono–Inyo Craters region, a hiking area not that far from Mammoth Lakes.
“The one thing I can say is the people have been wonderful,” Patricia Greene said of the many California volunteers. “They don’t know Matt, they never met him. They’re sharing their expertise of the area.”
Matthew Greene, 39, of Bethlehem, had been wearing his glasses more frequently because of recent difficulties with his contact lenses, Patricia Greene said, and she is hopeful to receive word on Monday if her son’s prescription matches those of the glasses that were found.
“At this point, we know it’s a long time but we’re trying to have hope. He’s a survivor, he’s good with the outdoors,” she said. “Either case, we want to bring him home.”
Mammoth Lakes police have said they haven’t had much luck in the search, as that area of the Eastern Sierra is very vast and rugged.
Greene went to the area in late June to hike and climb with friends. He stayed behind on a hike after his car needed repairs on July 16.
When his friends returned, they discovered Greene was missing along with some of his gear, and several pages were torn out of his guidebook, leading to speculation he went off on a hike.
