Mosquito samples collected in Lehigh and Northampton counties have tested positive for West Nile virus, state officials reported last week.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection reported finding positive samples in Allentown and the townships of Bushkill and North Whitehall.

DEP and Lehigh County West Nile virus staff members are responding to the positive tests with additional surveillance and control measures, officials said.

Mosquitoes can spread the virus to people, although most who are infected will develop no symptoms. Fewer than 1 percent develop a serious, sometimes fatal, neurological illness, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
