Veterans Day celebrated with events around region

Sunday

Easton: The South Side Civic Association hosted a Veterans Day program at Hays Cemetery. Members of Boy Scout Troop No. 6 as well as members of Rice-Ebner American Legion Post 588 participated.

Phillipsburg: Phillipsburg High School granted high school diplomas to all veterans who missed graduations due to military service. The 13 veterans joined some 150 others whom the high school previously honored through Operation Recognition.

Williams Township: About 160 people attended a ceremony at the Williams Township Municipal Building to honor the veterans who are currently serving and have served, as well as those who lost their lives doing so.

Monday

Hanover Township, Northampton County: Students at Hanover Elementary School, part of the Bethlehem Area School District, put on a program that included the children singing and the playing of taps.

Bethlehem: At Bethlehem Catholic High School, Monsignor Joseph Dooley, a veteran of World War II, shared personal photographs and stories during the Veterans Day program Monday. Auschwitz survivor Severin Fayerman also spoke to the students and other attendees.

Easton: Lt. Col. Timothy Brooks, a 20-year veteran of the Bethlehem Police Department who is commander of the 728th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion of the Pennsylvania National Guard, based in Spring City, Pa., spoke Monday in the World War I Oak Grove Memorial Garden at Easton's Upper Hackett Park.

Phillipsburg: The Green Street Elementary School held an assembly to teach students the importance of Veterans Day through songs and speeches.

Phillipsburg: The Bernadine-May American Legion Post organized the annual Veterans Day program at Shappel Park, where Navy veteran Edward Marcus delivered the keynote address.

Washington Township, N.J.: Port Colden and Brass Castle schools held a Veterans Day ceremony where the students sang songs and a plaque was dedicated to veterans from the Washington Township Education Association.

Wilson Borough: The Wilson Area High School's drum and bugle corps and elementary school students participated in a program on Washington Boulevard in Wilson Borough. It was organized by the Brown and Lynch American Legion Post 9 and the Northampton County Detachment's Marine Corps League.
