The weather is expected to be more seasonal by Christmas, according to the National Weather Service.
The temperature reached 63 degrees today at the Lehigh Valley International Airport, breaking the record of 61 degrees set in 1998, according to the National Weather Service.
That's a 13-degree jump from Saturday's high of 50 degrees, according to the NWS.
The reason for the unseasonably warm temperatures is a cool-down in the West sending high pressure and southwesterly winds to the Northeast, Rob Reale, meteorologist with WeatherWorks in Hackettstown, said earlier this week.
"It's kind of a reversal in the pattern, briefly," he said, adding that seasonably cold air is forecast to return Wednesday for Christmas and into the New Year.
Today's record temperature was accompanied by fog and mist, along with a southern wind of 13 mph, according to the NWS. Tonight's low is forecast to be 52 degrees.Monday is expected to bring showers, with the rain being heavy at times, according to the NWS. The temperature will drop to 48 degrees by 5 p.m.
Tuesday's weather is forecast to be more seasonal, with a slight chance of snow showers and a high near 37 degrees, according to the NWS. Christmas' weather on Wednesday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high of 30 degrees.
