From Massachusetts to New Jersey, the region is getting ready to be dumped on.

The snow hasn't started yet in the Lehigh Valley, but parts north are already seeing the effects of the storm.

In Massachusetts, which is forecast for up to 14 inches of snow, state workers are being sent home at 3 p.m., and the governor urged other businesses to follow suit, according to masslive.com.

Traffic is already becoming a nightmare there, with the speed limit on the Massachusetts Turnpike lowered to 40 mph from the New York border to Boston, masslive says.

The Providence Journal in Rhode Island offers tips on how to keep animals safe during the extreme cold. The tips from PETA encourage folks to report animals left outside without shelter to authorities. Providence is forecast to get hit with 6 to 10 inches.

In Syracuse, N.Y., which is forecast to see up to 12 inches, Syracuse.com readers are offering their best tips for driving in the snow, including "stay the heck out of the passing lane on the interstates."

In New Jersey, forecasters are urging residents to be alert: “This isn’t the night to stay late at work and finish up that project,” Gary Szatkowski, meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service’s Mount Holly office, told NJ.com. “I wouldn’t toy with (this storm).”
