Emergency officials were scrambling to man intersections where traffic lights were out.

A large power outage this morning had the Route 57 corridor as far east as Washington Township in Warren County temporarily in the dark, according to Jersey Central Power & Light's website and emergency radio reports.

Two substations failed and the outages stretched into Hunterdon County, where hundreds of customers were without power, JCP&L spokesman Pete Johner and the utility's outage site explained

At the outage's peak, about 2,500 customers were without power in the region, Johner said.

Police in Greenwich Township were scrambling about 10:30 to cover major intersections where the traffic lights were out, emergency dispatches indicated. The Greenwich area had between 501 and 1,500 customers without power at 10:55, JCP&L said on the outage site.

Johner at 11:05 said the exact number was 532 customers and that outage appeared to be centered in the Stewartsville neighborhood. By 11:15, the substation that serves that area was back online and power was back on, he said.

But more than 500 customers in the Bloomsbury area, served by a second substation, remained in the dark, Johner said.

While Johner said he didn't have a restoration time, the outage site points to 1 this afternoon.
