Berks County baby dies after accident with farming equipment, police say

The toddler was killed in Maxatawny Township, Berks County, near Kutztown, Pa.

A Berks County baby was killed Sunday after playing near a piece of farm equipment in Maxatawny Township, near Kutztown, Pa., according to Berks-Lehigh Regional police.

Police were dispatched at about 4:08 p.m. to the 600 block of Topton Road in the township. WFMZ is reporting the incident occurred at Burkholder Farms, a popular produce operation in a close-knit Mennonite community. The 1½-year-old boy was found on a top soil spreader, the Reading Eagle is reporting. Neighbors told the newspaper the toddler crawled under the spreader and got turned in.

County Deputy Coroner Ronald C. Peters said the child suffocated and the death has been ruled an accident, the Eagle reports.

No other injuries were reported in the incident, which remains under investigation, according to police.

No criminal charges were filed, according to authorities.
