Lower Saucon Township was hardest hit, with 1,977 PPL customers in the dark. There was a smattering of outages around the Lehigh Valley and eastern New Jersey.
A strong storm moving through the area this evening has left more than 3,300 residents without power in the Express-Times coverage area.
PPL Electric Utilities has been in a storm emergency since 2:30 p.m., according to its website. Lower Saucon Township was hit hardest by the outages, which left 1,977 PPL customers without power. Outages were also reported in Lehigh and Moore Townships, with 146 and 199 PPL customers without power, respectively.
There were two reported outages in Lower Mount Bethel Township, and a small number in Bethlehem and Hanover Township. PPL had not restored any customers power since the start of this evening's storms, according to its website.
Met-Ed External Affairs Manager Marc Troutman said about 463 Met-Ed customers scattered throughout Upper Mount Bethel, Wind Gap and a small area in Forks Township were without power. Troutman said downed trees on power lines were mainly responsible for the outages.
Met-Ed is assessing damages and starting repairs, Troutman said. He said he doesn't see any extensive issues that would keep power out for a long period of time.
A media spokesman from Jersey Central Power & Light said about 600 New Jersey customers in total were without power in Warren and Hunterdon Counties. He said the company expects to restore power this evening but could not provide a specific time.
The National Weather Service previously reported the region had the greatest risk for severe thunderstorms between 2 to 8 p.m.
