Heavy thunderstorms could lead to small stream, urban flooding, National Weather Service warns

The 2012 precipitation deficit, which stood at 1.73 inches this morning, could be wiped out today.

The 2012 precipitation deficit going into today in the Lehigh Valley is 1.73 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

It's been as high as 5 inches earlier this year.

And if the thunderstorms embedded in today's rain showers live up to their potential, that deficit could be wiped out today, a weather service meteorologist said this morning.
"It's possible. ... It's pretty much going to rain everywhere today," Lee Robertson said. The deficit is measured at Lehigh Valley International Airport.
But then there will be a break for several days.

The weather service warns that small streams and urban areas could flood today, especially if rain hits 2 inches within three hours.

Today's thunderstorms will be a bit different than the usual summer drill of a hot humid summer day that descends into wicked storms. It will rain much of today with thunderstorms embedded within that precipitation, Robertson said.
