Items for men sold well near Father's Day, while women's sportswear, furniture and sales of children's items did not perform well, the company reports.
Sales dropped slightly in June when compared with the year before at The Bon-Ton Stores Inc., according to a news release this morning from the York, Pa.-based retailer with several stores in the Lehigh Valley and northwest New Jersey.Sales at stores open at least a year were down 0.8 percent in June, the company reported. Overall, sales were down 1 percent from $240.8 million to $238.3 million, The Bon-Ton said. Sales for the year are down 0.9 percent overall and off 0.7 percent at stores open at least a year, the company said.
“June sales were uneven throughout the month. During the Father’s Day promotional period, customers responded favorably when we strengthened our marketing with emphasis on value, which also improved the ease of our customers’ shopping experience," President and Chief Executive Officer Brendan Hoffman said in the news release. "We were disappointed, however, with sales at the end of the month, which we believe were negatively affected by the timing of the July Fourth holiday and the severe storms in some of our markets.
Sale of men's items during the run up to Father's Day were particularly strong, he said. Women's sportswear, furniture and sales of children's items pulled down the overall number, he said. Online business was "excellent," he said.
