Severe thunderstorms called for Lehigh Valley and New Jersey - UPDATE

Thousands in Lehigh, Northampton counties without power.

The National Weather Service at Mount Holly N.J. is calling for strong thunderstorms in Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton and Warren counties.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 9 p.m.

Amid the stormy weather, Easton also saw record-high temperatures today at 98 degrees. The last time the temperature reached that level was in 1999.

The NWS said the storms will bring heavy rain and warn of flooding in areas with normally poor draining as well as cloud to ground lightening.

Officials advise residents not to seek shelter under trees when lighting appears, but rather move indoors.

Emergency radio is reporting downed trees and power lines around the Valley and in Warren County. Several trees toppled in the Phillipsburg area after a strong line of storms swept through about 4 p.m.

PPL is reporting 343 customers in Lehigh County without power; 1,818 customers in Northampton County are in the dark, the utility reported.

Met-Ed is reporting outages in Bangor and Easton, and East Allen, Lehigh, Lower Mount Bethel, Moore, Palmer, Plainfield, Williams, Washington, Upper Mount Bethel and Upper Nazareth townships.
