Pohatcong and Upper Saucon townships said they will make their presence known today during showings of "The Dark Knight Rises" following an early morning mass murder during a showing of the movie in suburban Denver.

Pohatcong officers will periodically walk into the four screens showing the film throughout the day, Chief Jeffrey Greenemeir said.

He met with managers of the Regal cinema at 1246 Highway 22 East this morning to discuss strategy, he said.

The theater has "beefed up" security but did not want to disclose specifics, Greenemeir said.

The chief said there were more cars than usual in the parking lot this morning. A midnight showing of the film at the Lower Nazareth Township Regal sold out last night.

Upper Saucon Chief Robert Coyle said police will have two extra officers tonight at the Rave theater at 2805 Center Valley Parkway. They normally have one officer patrol the cinema on Fridays.

He acknowledged the sight of officers could ease some worried minds.

"Normally, it doesn't make them happy to see us," Coyle said of some younger patrons.

He said they had met with managers of Rave who were very pleased with the increased presence.

The rampage of James Holmes, 24, in Aurora, Colo., killed 12 and injured at least 50 more people.

The killings have prompted increased security at theaters in New York City and canceled the Paris premiere of the film, according to The Associated Press.

The Colonial Regional Police Department, which patrols the Regal in Lower Nazareth Township, has not returned a phone message.
