Quakertown police and a Lehigh County tactical response team surrounded an Upper Saucon Township home about 9 p.m. Thursday, but did not find a suspect from a bank robbery in Quakertown, according to Lt. Donald Bender of Quakertown police.
The TD Bank at Trainers Corner was robbed at 7:52 p.m. by a white man wearing dark clothing and a fake costume beard, Bender said. He described the beard as long and orange, similar to those worn by members of the band ZZ Top.
The robber, brandishing a revolver, entered the bank and left with an undisclosed amount of money, Bender said. There were at least three employees inside the bank, but it was unclear if there were any customers in the bank at that time; no one was hurt, he said.
The robber was seen leaving the bank in a dark-colored Cadillac, Bender said. That information was shared with area police departments and the Springfield Township Police Department shortly after a dark-colored Cadillac was seen traveling north on Route 309, Bender said.
Springfield Township police followed the vehicle to a home in the 4100 block of Fairmont Street in Upper Saucon, Bender said. The driver got out of the car, refused verbal commands to stop and ran away, he said.
At that point, police were unsure if the robber had entered the home through a back door or if he had run off, Bender said. The tactical team was summoned and the home was entered, but it was empty, Bender said. Police are still investigating whether the robber has any connection to the home, he said.
The Cadillac has been impounded and police are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for it, Bender said.
An FBI spokesman would not say how much money was taken in the robbery.
