And here's a news flash -- the temperature could be above normal by mid-April, WeatherWorks predicts.
About 5:20 this morning, a Lafayette College pickup truck moved along Hamilton Street on Easton's College Hill, its plow in the up position, once again ready for action.
But even through it's going to snow yet again this morning -- likely starting before 8 o'clock (it was snowing by 7:45 in Easton) -- that plow may never be lowered to the road, according to a meteorologist at WeatherWorks in Hackettstown.
While it could snow anywhere from a half inch to 3 inches in the Lehigh Valley and northwest New Jersey, this is likely to be yet another of those storms where snow accumulates on the grass but leaves roads wet, Sam DeAlba said.
Watch the weather on AccuWeather's radar.
With the snow arriving after sun-up, and with the air temperature already in the mid-30s and the surface temperature about 40 before 6:30, conditions are not ripe for sticking, DeAlba said. The temperature did drop as the snow fell, which isn't unusual, and was 34 by mid-morning. Some back roads, shaded areas or sidewalks could see slush or some accumulating snow but majors should be fine, he said.
As we slowly move toward an average snowfall season -- with no accumulation above 6 inches, but with about 30 snowfalls -- it's been a "fairly active" storm season with "light to moderate events," DeAlba said.
But today, fingers crossed, could be the last day of real snow as two low pressure areas deliver the precipitation, he said. There could be a storm in next Monday's forecast, but we could, at long last, be on the warm side of the weather.
Currently, high pressure stuck above Greenland and parts of Canada are causing a "blocking" scenario, keeping the region on the north side of storms, giving us north or northwest winds and snow. There will be more snow today to the south than the north, he said.
That pattern could begin to break up in the first 10 days of April, giving us the possibility -- believe it or not -- of above average temperatures by the middle of the month, DeAlba said.
Today's high will be about 11 degrees below normal, the National Weather Service predicts.
The worst of today's weather should be between 9 this morning and 2 this afternoon, with a projected high temperature in the low 40s, he said. And it stays chilly throughout the week, forecasters indicate.
But spring will eventuality spring, DeAlba said.
"Personally, I'm sick of snow," he said. "I'm ready for spring."
